So first, my H-to-the-P background: I’ve never read the books. But my boyfriend in college was appalled I’d never seen the movies. So we watched the first three all in one night. I recall something about a pumpkin patch and a giant spider. And waking up alone in his living room at 4 a.m.
So, as you can tell, I was all sorts of ready to watch Harry Potter movie numero six. Went with the young women in my ward on opening day. Waited in line. Ran to Target to get candy. Ran to the theater to reserve an entire row of seats. And who says I’m not a fan now?
The verdict: Disjointed – but its cute. The teen boppers all loved it.
The synopsis: It was all guy likes girl, then guy is randomly traveling with old wizard dude, and then someone is snogging someone else – and crying – and then guy is randomly traveling with old wizard dude again. Back to school, where an old book with the answers written in means good grades – wasn’t that so true in high school? But hark! All of the sudden Golam travels over from Lord of the Rings, clones himself about 100 times and starts trying to eat the guy and old wizard dude. But wait – that’s just a magic memory stuck in a vial and revealed in a bucket. Or is it? And then guy is back wanting girl and crying, and then both are totally bummed because their crushes like someone else. And then someone is the Half Blood Prince, but you never really find out what that means. Its like a healthy dose of welcome to life with witches killing people.
Best quote: At the end of the movie, the last line is seriously (or somewhat close to it) “You know, we’ll come fight the bad guys with you Harry, we’ve got your back – and don’t worry, Ron doesn’t care if you kiss his sister, as long as you don’t do it too much.”
I’m not even kidding. Thank you Hermoine.
And a bonus thought: Am I the only one thinking that Harry Potter and the Hermione chick should hook up? There’s a lot of tension there. They really need to snog or shag or something British that ends with a g.
Still, I liked it. I got caught up with the love story and the wizardry part and what not. I don’t like fantasy – imagination for me is getting completely caught up with a chick flick, but it was cute.
And, can I also add that by far the best part of the movie was the Where the Wild Things Are preview. I remember my elementary school librarian reading that book over and over.
